Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and hey, remember that one series called “UNDERGROUDN SHOUTOUT” I made because I thought I’d get a lot of requests from smaller artists to look at their stuff but then I didn’t get requests? Well, I got one again, so here’s another installment of that series!
Justin Case is an Illinoisan rapper who specializes in making laid-back production and spitting clever wordplay. I was recommended to listen to his whole project, “YOOTH”, which just came out last week. The whole project is very, very good, but, since this series only focuses on single songs, I decided to talk about my favorite song on the project, that being “2 Weeks”.
On it, Case goes more introspective than I have ever heard him before, as he addresses a hard break up and how the other partner quickly recovered with another man while he was still sad. The sorrowful synths in the background match the tone of the track, which is helped by the “I swear” vocals in the chorus (I don’t know whether it’s a sample or original vocals, but whichever one it is, I love the addition to the song). Case leaves most of his wordplay to the side on this song so he can really get to the meat of the topic as he details all his aspirations with his ex-lover, like “You was saving up to buy your own car and stuff/But I guess I always dreamed that I would get it for you”. This lets us see his heartbreak as he goes into the second verse talking about how quickly she moved on, but he goes about it with a sense of maturity and blames some of his sadness on him being “stuck in the past”. This is really a great track, and if you like this song, I would really recommend you check his entire “YOOTH” project. It’s sweet and short, and you’ll love it if you’re as big a fan of punchline rap as I am.

I have not heard of Justin Case but I will surely check out his songs. I will also look for your first “UNDERGROUND SHOUTOUT” series. Smaller artists can be much more talented than others.
