MC’s Song Of The Week #43: “FourFiveSeconds” by Rihanna, Kanye West, & Paul McCartney

Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and for my 43rd Song Of The Week, I will be discussing “FourFiveSeconds” by Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney.

This song was a huge pop hit awhile ago, but it was just recently that I really got into it. I’ve been listening to it a lot over the past few weeks! Truly, it is a great song, and it’s one that pairs three unlikely artists together: pop singer Rihanna, rap/businessman Kanye West, and musical legend Paul McCartney. Having these three musicians on one song seems like it would make for a really awkward blending of styles, but the three band together and actually make a piece of music that is quite enjoyable. Despite how much grandiose starpower is on this track, the song takes the form of a mellow acoustic ballad, containing only of a guitar and bass, with some type of organ or keyboard coming in later on. Paul McCartney is responsible for most of the production on this track, mainly the guitar part (and apparently he performs those high pitched vocals on the second verse). He does a great job at making a catchy riff, as it works perfectly for Rihanna and Kanye to perform over. Lyrically, the song is about wildin’ out from all the pressures of life. This is kind of an odd topic to have on an acoustic track, since the topic and sound of the song create some dissonance, but that doesn’t stop this track from being any less amazing! It’s a really catchy tune full of talent, and it’s something I would highly recommend you check out if you have not yet heard it yet!
