MC’s Song Of The Week #34: “Courageous” by Casting Crowns

Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and for my 34th edition of Song Of The Week, I will be discussing “Courageous” by Casting Crowns.

I recently started attending a private Christian college, as I wanted to pursue some type of higher education after high school. I am very happy with the school I am attending now, as it is able to give me the education I want while also building my faith and growing me closer to a great community. However, it being a Christian college, it got me thinking of all the old contemporary Christian songs I listened to when I went to church as a kid, and THIS is one of those songs.

“Courageous” is a Christian pop-rock song that takes heavy inspiration from contemporary Christian music and post-modern grunge. The instrumentals of the song really fall under this “post-modern grunge” category, filled heavily with electric guitar riffs and loud drums. Lyrically, the song is very similar to many contemporary Christian tracks, but the vocals provided really add emphasis to the lyrics. The singer of Casting Crowns has a rasp in his voice that is able to bring out the power of the lyrics, making this a great track to praise to. Also, I’ll admit that this song is more of a personal preference than anything, partly because it is a bit nostalgic for me, but also because it resonates with me. I appreciate all Christian music, but some of it resonates with me more than others, which is why you don’t hear me talk about Christian music all the time on here. For some reason, the lyrics and power behind this track really do a lot for me, and that is why I think you should all check it out!
