Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and for this segment of “Song Of The Week”, I will be discussing Lil Wayne’s song “Don’t Cry”, featuring XXXTENTACION.
I wanted to talk about this song today because this is one of the songs that inspired me to start this series. The first time I heard this song, I listened to it about six times, and I thought “wouldn’t it be great if I could tell my followers about this”, but since it wasn’t that new when I first heard it, I didn’t want to do a song review of it. And so, this series came into fruition, and I can finally tell you all about this song.
This song is the second track off of Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter V”, and while I have yet to listen to the whole album, it is probably great if this song is any indicator of the project’s quality. The track starts off with some ominous synths that resonate throughout the whole song, and then jumps into XXXTENTACION’s posthumous chorus. Opinions on whether people like his chorus are divided, but I like it a lot. While some say he sung it poorly, I think his strained vocal inflections do a lot to add emotion to the track. Lil Wayne also does great on his verses, providing some great wordplay like “Color blind even if I may be blue/A lot on my plate, ain’t my favorite food” and “I told myself, ‘It’s just you and I’/Then the breeze came and it blew my mind”. To be frank, Lil Wayne is a hit-or-miss artist for me, but this song is definitely a hit, so that’s why I made it my song of the week.
