Lil Xan’s “Watch Me Fall” Song Review

Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and now that it’s the beginning of January, we’re in an uncanny valley of music.  In January, big artists don’t usually release projects or singles and all of the big hits are the songs that were relevant at the end of December, and I’ve covered a lot of those already, so I’m just kind of stuck with small releases until some more interesting stuff comes out.  That leaves us with…Lil Xan.

I talked plenty about Lil Xan on my Top 5 WORST Albums Of 2018 list where his album “TOTAL XANARCHY” landed the third spot.  On that album, Lil Xan proved himself to be not only one of the most grating, but also one of the most nonessential newcomers in hip-hop, as he creaky voice floods the awful production of every song on that album.  My biggest pet peeve with him, though, is his lyrics, as he has a strong tendency to throw in fake-emo lyrics among all his run-of-the-mill brag raps.  The best example I used when talking on “TOTAL XANARCHY” was on his song “Betrayed”, where the chorus talked about the negative effects of Xanax, but the second verse led right into the beautiful line “And her p*ssy tastes like Skittles…You can really taste the rainbow”.  Not even a year after that album’s release, Lil Xan has decided to grace us all with another single titled “Watch Me Fall“, and my curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to check it out.  I’m always up for giving people second chances, so I jumped into this song headfirst, and I will say that I am impressed by one thing about it: he doesn’t throw in brag raps with his emo lyrics!

Don’t watch me fall
Don’t watch me fall down

You left me broken, left on the side
I don’t understand anything but time (Ooh)
And if you run away, I swear to God I’ll chase you, girl

I’m ready for war, I’m ready for war

Lil Xan is actually able to talk about a topic that isn’t about bragging or flexing and is able to stick with it for the whole song!  It’s incredible, something that’s never been done before!  So, I was pretty impressed to see that Lil Xan was able to do this, but there is so much more that is wrong with this song that I couldn’t possibly say it’s all good.

For one, Lil Xan’s voice is terrible on this.  Even with autotune, he can barely carry a tune.  He has so many vocal cracks where his voice just fades out of existence for a second, and when his voice does this, the autotune can’t correct a tune since there is no tune being sung.  This all makes him sound like he is trying to sing with laryngitis, and you must be a really bad singer to sound this bad even with autotune.

Also, I said I was impressed by Lil Xan’s lyrics because he was actually able to stick to a topic that wasn’t drugs or money, but that’s mainly because there aren’t many lyrics to begin with.  You know the ones that I showed above?  Those are pretty much the only lyrics in the song.  There are only about two or three lines other lyrics that are in the song, leaving this track with around ten unique lyrics.  Having a near three minute runtime, though, there is a lot of repetition.  The lyrics “Don’t watch me fall down” and “Don’t let me fall down” are approximately half of all the lines in this song (and, trust me, I counted).  This leaves the listener feeling bored halfway through the song, as most of the lyrics are the same exact thing.

Overall, I held out some hope for Lil Xan, but my hope was terribly misplaced.  The beat is actually pretty good compared to a lot of the production on “TOTAL XANARCHY”, and Lil Xan is able to stick to a decent topic, but the track is severely underwritten, and Lil Xan’s vocals and flows sound worse than ever.  I know this was a pretty short review, but that’s mainly because this song did not give me much to work with.  I would give this song a 1.5 out of 5.  Do you agree?
