Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and I have not done an “Underground Shoutout” in a while. I made it a new series and then did not get any more requests from artists. Oh, well. I have one now, so let me tell you about Angry Blackmen’s song “Riot!”
Angry Blackmen are a hip-hop duo hailing from Chicago consisting of members Quentin Branch and Brian Warren. I was unsure of what this song would be like before I went into it, but I came out very impressed. Firstly, for being a small group, they have great production. I loved the drum patterns on this, and the instrumentals as a whole–especially those ambient chords in the beginning–reminded me of the early 2010s style of dark trap seen on songs like 2 Chainz’s “Birthday Song”, which gives this track some good energy.
The lyrics on this are great, too. The tension really builds when the whispered chorus “Are you down to start a riot, are you down to start a war?” slithers into your ears. Then, the song turns up when the verses hit. Both artists in this duo have great flows on this, and their chemistry is irrefutable. The lyrics themselves deliver crafty brag raps while shoving in some great imagery and allusions like “Standing in the Garden, getting bit by the snake”. Needless to say, I really enjoyed this song, and if you are looking for some heavy-hitting hip-hop, I would suggest this song to you.
